Are Bloggers the new Comedians?

Last night as I was dozing off to sleep I had what I will only call now a “brilliant” idea for a blog post; now that I can’t for the life of me remember what it was I wanted to write about. Seriously, I’ve spent all morning trying to remember. It’s like I’m turning into one of those neurotic stand-up comedians who has to keep a yellow notepad beside their bed only to wake up to hieroglyphs and a few marginally funny jokes. Which brings me, organically, to my ad hoc point. Are bloggers the new comedians?

Take Leandra Medine. Good ole’ Man Repeller. She don’t got the looks but damn can she make a witty quip about a pair of J.W. Anderson gold boots. And the crowd goes wild! She’s one of the only publications I actually take time out of my precious day to read. Why? Because I feel slightly smarter, slightly happier and if anything, I get a good ab workout from her prose.

Another account I love is the “when they were kids” series by Fashion Cartoonist. One day these emails just started showing up in my inbox featuring his latest cartoon – and I was hooked. Thanks, spam gods, you got it right (for once). I don’t need viagra – I need funny comics about Anna Wintour trying to go on a “fashion night out” when it’s past her bedtime, or Calvin Klein signing his dad’s underwear when he finally learns how to write his name. They are a bit dry, very topical and will always get a quick chuckle outta me. If you don’t want to subscribe to the emails (like I unwittingly did), you can always follow along on Insta @fashioncartoonist.

And let’s have a moment of silence for Fuck Yeah Menswear. I can read you over and over and over again.

So now I ask you, do I tickle you the same way? I’ve been working on my jokes for a bit – and although I don’t pretend to be funny, I like to think I’m witty. The difference between funny and witty is like comparing a B+ to and A- in school. Funny will make you piss your pants. Witty will not. Funny will make you cry. Witty will not. Funny will make you ROTFL. Witty might not even make you laugh at all. Funny is mainstream. Witty is not. Funny is Vince Vaughan. Witty is Larry David. But if witty and funny were in the same class in high school, witty would get a better grade. Why? Because witty is smarter than funny.

Witty lights a fire in your heart and in your mind that cannot be put out. Once you’ve been enlightened you want to find wit in every day life. NB: You will offend people. But those who get it, get it.

I’m looking for those people who take fashion very seriously – so much so, that they need to find wit in it, like Margaret Zhang. And those are the bloggers who I aspire to be like. And that’s why I go to bed at night trying to think of a new way to talk about dunking your bread in tomato sauce and knee wrinkles. I think it’s just as useful to the fashion world as a photograph of peonies and stationary. Meaning, not at all. So let’s get superfluous together, ok?
