It happens all the time. I take the scenic route to a Jetset People post – it starts with one photograph of the subject, and subsequently, a sweeping Google search of everything they’ve ever styled, shot, street styled, bought, sold, loved, hated, and ate. Their ambitions, their failures; their Instagram fails and Twitter tales. So much so that today, I feel like I could give a seminar on the life and times of Barbara Martelo, fashion icon and stylist of Vogue España fame. Tomorrow, it will all be forgotten. Lost in a recess of my mind along with everything else Google has taught me.
Even if memory fails me (I’m only in my twenties, I think?), each jet-set person and I are inextricably bound for life when outfit inspiration is nigh. It’s like method acting only for bloggers. Taking style cues from Martelo requires that I live like Martelo, that I become Martelo. Not unlike Robert Downy Jr.’s seminal performance in Tropic Thunder wherein he plays a dude, playing a dude, disguised as another dude. The layers overlap, blurred by mistaken identities and a Balmain blazer that should’ve been mine.
She even makes me rethink my ombre for half a second.
