A Fashion Week Step and Repeat

Getting your picture taken outside the tents during fashion week can be terrifying. My usual plan of action is walk at a reasonably brisk pace towards the entrance, eyes looking straight ahead, with purpose, and stop for no one. Of course, that almost always gets thwarted by bumping into friends (or fans, occasionally) and if I’m lucky, a mob of street style photographers circling around me.

The first time I was ever mobbed I thought I was going to collapse into the arms of a bystander like a damsel in distress. My legs started to shake uncontrollably as the cameras flashed; they felt like two sticks of jello about to wibble-wobble me to the ground. As you all know, I’m used to being in front of the camera on a daily basis like it’s no biggie. But in front of a mob of photographers, I was a fish out of water.

“Get it together,” I said to myself under my breath.

As if on cue, another peacocking fashionistas appeared just metres from where I was painstakingly standing and like children with short attention spans, the photographers all turned away to focus on her. Relief came over instantly but underneath, my clothes were soaked through with sweat – omg, so embarrassing, right? Next time the mob came looking for me, I would bring my A-game with the new Dove Dry Spray anti-perspirant and rock solid step and repeat.

Since that experience, I’ve started to take a more confident approach to being street styled. Did you know that some bloggers actually stage their walks? They’ll prance back and forth, over and over, stepping and repeating, until all the photographers are satisfied. It’s not about rushing into the show with your outfit (and pride) trailing behind you – it’s about having the confidence to stop and smile, repeat.

How does one obtain confidence? Ah, young grasshopper, that is the question on every blogger’s mind. For me, it all starts with feeling good about myself. When I use my favourite beauty products, for example, I automatically start to feel more confident about the way I look and less frightened by the prospect of someone else paying attention to me (and in the case of fashion week, a whole bunch of people toting DSLRs like heavy artillery pointed in my direction).

One of my favourite products that really has a two-fold purpose is the new Dove Dry Spray Anti-Perspirant – it gives me 48 hour protection and with 1/4 moisturizer, it leaves my underarms feeling smooth and soft. It helps me to feel beautiful when I start my day and keeps me dry under pressure when the cameras start to flash. I also love that it goes on instantly dry, and the best part about that? No visible residue on my outfit!

It has been a indispensable new beauty product for me this Toronto Fashion Week, and I was happy to see a Dove booth when I arrived at the Soia & Kyo show last night featuring the new Dry Spray – it totally made me feel better about facing my fears and making the effort to spend more time stepping and repeating for all the street style photographers outside the tents.

Whenever a situation scares me I try to put myself in that situation as often as possible, like in the case of the fashion week step and repeat – but from now on, not without the new Dove Dry Spray to give me that extra vote of confidence.
