If you Snooze, Do you Really Lose?

Those of you lucky enough to follow me on Snapchat will know that I had a little sleepover at The Templar Hotel last night. Well, I mostly laid in bed with the covers over my eyes trying to shield myself from the bathroom lights that, for the life of me, I couldn’t find the switch to turn off. Not to mention the girl screaming in ecstasy down the hall followed by loud banging noises. Needless to say, I did not get a good night’s sleep and to my chagrin, I found the bathroom light switch UNDERNEATH THE TELEVISION this morning. Like, really, is that a cruel joke?

At breakfast, a few of us got to talking about sleep and the snooze button. I was delighted to discover that I’m not alone in my abuse of the snooze button every morning wherein I set my alarm exactly one hour before I need to wake up so I can roll over every 5 minutes to hit the snooze button until I’ve accumulated enough rage to get out of bed and start my day.

I just love starting my day in a rage. Really jump-starts the brain and metabolism.

Anyway, it occurred to me that this behaviour is actually something us snooze-abusers should be ashamed of. Imagine getting a full extra hour of sleep without interruption? It sounds enticing, until you’re in it, and then the alarm rings at the exact moment you must get out of bed and all the sadness of the world is on your shoulders in that precise moment. No snooze?!?! That’s like telling me there’s no Santa Claus.

Luckily we were also brunching with sleep (and life) expert, Gary LeBlanc, and he suggested using this app called Smart Alarm, which wakes you up gently and can track when you’re in the lightest stages of your sleep cycle to do so. Gary wakes up to birds in the forest, that start off soft, getting increasingly louder so as to wake you gradually and peacefully.

Someone cracked a joke about staying in bed until the soundtrack escalated to rabid crows and something from Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. That would so be me and my snooze button, waking up in a rage. “We’re under attack!!!!! Run for cover!!!!”

Obviously my boyfriend would sleep through all of the above. I think he needs the WWII luftshutzsirene to get him out of bed, and even then, he’d do so giving the most side-eye ever.

What are your sleeping bad habits? Do you hit the snooze like me or do you like to sleep in and wake up naturally? Leave a comment and let’s commiserate!

Yup. I’m an abuser of the snooze button as well. I generally give myself that extra 30 mins of snooze time but let’s face it, I usually go over the said 30, meaning I’m in bed for about a good hour as well. Geoff doesn’t understand why I’m abusing snooze so much lately but fuck, I’m tired!

You know, the Smart Alarm has been really great the past two nights. It wakes me up when I’m in my lightest stage of sleep, with birds chirping. And then I get dressed just like Cinderella. I have birds tightening my bra straps and cute little mice shaving my toes, all while singing and feeding them corn. #DISNEYPRINCESS.

Hi Justine! Love this post. Would you mind telling me the exact name of the app? When I search for smart alarm there are several and I’ve even downloaded a few but none seem to be the one you are referring to (no Mediterranean forest alarm)… Thanks so much! xx

Lol it’s call “Smart Alarm Clock: sleep cycles & night sounds recording.” It took me a while to find the Mediterranean forest, you have to search under Music, and the folder is called “Cheerful Awakening: Nature” – You’ll find the Mediterranean forest in there. Happy Sleeping!
