My Style | Stella in the Streets

I am simply going bananas over Hayley Phelan’s latest article on Style.com, Looking Like Money: How Wellness Became the New Luxury Status Symbol. In it, she poses that being rich goes hand in hand with being fit, (and hand in hand with a green-juice-in-hand selfie). Guilty? Oh baby you have no idea. I’m drinking a cold-pressed juice as I write this blog post – but, actually.

Can I afford a twelve dollar bottle of cucumber and ginger excretions? No. But why is it that I can justify spending the money on this little glass bottle and yet refuse to buy a new pair of sockettes when mine inevitably, give way to my viscous talons on the third wear, puncturing my pride and my pocketbook. And yet here I am, writing this blog post wearing a pair of sockettes with a hole in the left toe, drinking my twelve dollar juice.

Phelan’s theory? “Wellness has become an important part of the luxury lifestyle.” For better or for worse I am living a luxurious lifestyle if it’s the death of me; part of that or maybe all of that means my yoga classes, my green juice, my vitamins, my organic skincare and my luxurious workout gear – enter, Adidas by Stella McCartney.

Way ahead of the curve, Stella McCartney has paved the way for designer sportswear and I, for one, am so proud of my decision to invest early. This cropped sweater (with sparkles) may be so 2007 but I’m going to be milking it for what it’s worth these days. If you see me rollin’ with my green juice and Stella McCartney you know I’ve made it.

Peace.

LOL me too – it totally comes in handy when I’m extra cold or just want to disappear.

I read this after a meeting discussing food insecurity and ways to increase access to affordable nutritious food. I think articles positioning healthy living and nutritious eating as luxurious are …. Problematic.

I think they are just pointing out the fact that healthy food and healthy living are luxury commodities, which I agree, is shitty especially since I love my cold-pressed juice so much. But this is rooted in something much more severe than journalistic commentary, (politics, economics, demographics, world-trade)
