I thought since I bill this beast as a fashion blog I ought to proffer fashion advice once in a while in between all the bitching about saggy boobs, life-woes and relationship goals. So here I am. Being a fashion blogger. The 70s came back hard as this season’s most pronounced trend. Alex and I were talking about it just the other day; how last fall the groundwork for this trend was already being laid with the advent of shearlings, flares and a bit of fringe. But you couldn’t quite manage to spit the words out. This fall? The 70s are on the tip of everybody’s tongue – and in everybody’s shopping cart. There is so much out there it can certainly be overwhelming – but rest assured you don’t need to throw out your entire wardrobe and replace it with Saturday Night Fever (like I did). A few key pieces can go a long way.  So let me fashion blog you a bit today as I give you my pro tips on how to get that 70s chic this season.

  1. Tie a noose. Ok not actually, but the more things you tie around your neck, the better. This can range from pussy bow to leather choker. Some things to remember? Think thin! Give your chunky scarves and pashminas a rest this season, opt for skinny scarves instead. My top picks: Hermès Twilly $205 CAD; Zara stretch scarf $17.99 CAD; Are You Am I leather chocker $45.00 USD; Forever21 faux pearl chocker $6.90 CAD.
  2. Flares. If there was ever a time to bring back flared jeans, the time is nigh. Word to the wise? Don’t get them hemmed. The longer they drag, the farther you’ll go in life. Shoes that match well with flares? Velvet platform sandals, clogs and Adidas Stan Smiths. My top picks: Paige Denim Fiona Flares $259 USD; Zara cropped denim trouser $49.90 CAD; J Brand High Rise Flare $198 USD.
  3. Turtlenecks. When were these ever not in, by the way? Turtlenecks are the best thing since sliced bread. Tits look fab in them, shoulders never felt so broad, torsos are longer than ever. Wear them this season as a major layering piece under pinafores and jumpers. Get one in every colour: white, black, brown, navy, grey and one novelty colour such as forest green, burgundy and blush pink. My top picks: Zara polo neck sweater $29.90 CAD; H&M studded turtleneck top $49.99 USD; Intermix turtleneck sweater $480 CAD.
  4. Thigh Highs. There are two types of thigh highs. Stuart Weitzman and Stuart Weitzman. Ok, Gianvito Rossi makes a drool-worthy pair of thigh highs but they are way out of my price range! That’s why you can’t go wrong with Stuart. Lowland boots $803.45 USD
  5. Fringe Bucket Bag. So many options for this one. I think every single accessories brand made their own spin on this baby. I love to style my fringe bucket bag with everything from a black tuxedo to flared sweatpants. My picks: Zara fringed messenger style bucket bag $45.90 CAD; TOMS Sienna Celestial crossbody $164 CAD; Rebecca Minkoff Fiona bucket bag $276.99 USD; Saint Laurent fringe bucket bag $1990 USD.
  6. Knitted Sweatpants. Ok this is the perfect item to go with your fringe bucket bag, cashmere turtleneck and shearling jacket. Wear them long like a bridal train, and wear them with anything from Birkenstocks to platforms. Do it like this girl at Milan Fashion Week – anyone know who she is and what pants those are???? My picks: Misguided Knitted Flare Trousers (now on sale!) $47.04 CAD. I can’t seem to find them anywhere else!!! These knitted sweatpants are my Waterloo. (ASOS ones are OK, too).
  7. Shearling. Now is the time to finally invest in this piece for good. Shearlings are always in style – I would argue they are more chic than fur. I love me a good shearling moto jacket. Who makes the best? You can get the faux deal at your favourite fast fashion retailer or you can go big with Chloé FW15 reversible shearling peacoat at $10,000. But don’t worry, it’s already sold out everywhere. My picks: Zara short jacket $69.90 CAD; Helmut Lang aviator shearling $3995 CAD; Acne Shearling Biker jacket $3300 CAD.
  8. Nude lips and bangs. A bit of beauty advice for this season? Keep your bangs long and shaggy; keep your lips nude. If you’re looking for the best shag cut, please visit my stylist (I have to be honest, I’ve had a few people try to blow-dry my hair other than Anna and they all got it totally wrong – even after I showed them pics and gave them specific instructions). As we say, that’s the difference between a pedestrian salon and an editorial salon. So, if you want it done right (and believe me, you do) book an appointment with Anna Barseghian at Brennen Demelo Studio email: info@brennendemelo.com or call 416-301-1072. Now for lipstick I have my go-to faves: Tom Ford Blush Nude; Lise Watier Noble Nude; NARS Steven Klein Besame Mucho. In order of appearance: concealer beige, rose-peach nude and glossy almost-brownish caramel nude. Those 3 will have your bases covered.

My body & face shape so want rock 70s style- but my shortness isn’t great for flares & my face isn’t made for bangs. I envy you!

Ps: what is a pussy bow? I’d google it, but I’m on my work computer ;) :p /but for real.

BAHAHAHAHA. best. A pussy bow is those blouses that have a two ribbons around the neck that you can tie in a loose bow. IDK why it’s called that…. So bad.
