Jetset Fashion | Case of the Ex

Jetset Fashion | Case of the Ex

Breakups suck. The crying, the ice cream binging, and now, the wearing of our ex’s clothes after taking garden shears to them. Steven Tai’s Fall 14 collection is inspired by the stage-5 clinger: a girl who breaks up with her boyfriend, cuts up his clothes and wears them. Sound familiar?

Her man must have been stylishly flamboyant; the perfect, quirky velvet flowers, and an oversized varsity jacket in a just pink pastel. He also wore Lurex: a synthetic fabric woven with aluminum to give the appearance of gold. Behind the Candelabra, indeed. Tai deconstructs the fabric, one thread at a time, making it look raw and rugged on the top half of a dress; the bottom half a tour de force fringe that takes upwards of fifteen hours to complete. Lastly, the blue jean trench coat in a hard denim that Tai encourages the wearer to put through the wash as many times as she needs (to evidently remove the stench of her ex’s cologne).

Steven Tai’s girl strikes a balance somewhere in between gender-bending and a street style darling undercover. What you need to complete this look: an ex-boyfriend, a pair of scissors, wide-leg pants and Air Jordans. Couldn’t we see Man Repeller and Camille over the Rainbow donning a version of this Divorce, Steven Tai Style?
