My Style | Mom’s Fur Coat

While everyone fiddles with New Year’s resolutions and farewells to old habits, I always maintain that reflection should be ongoing – the unexamined life is not worth living – and all that. So, I hardly ever do a New Year’s resolution or revolution. Same reason I never give anything up for lent. If you’re a good person all year round, you won’t have to renounce indulgences for 40 days to feel less guilty about your sins. I also love pontificating, if you haven’t realized by now.

One book I loved reading this year was SHOCKED by Patricia Volk – a cute little memoir that tells the story of Elsa Schiaparelli vis-a-vis the life and times of Audrey Volk, the author’s mother and legendary hostess of one of New York City’s most upscale restaurant. For anyone who loves high fashion and loves high society, this is a must-read.

Growing up Upper East Side, Volk remembers her first requisite fur coat. Made-to-measure and her initials in the lining. Back then, every girl got a fur coat when she hit puberty. So did my mom. And she, unlike Patricia Volk, was poor.

Sadly, that tradition has not endured in my family. When I hit puberty all I got was a maxi pad and a two extra strength Tylenol. My only consolation is that I get to borrow the fur whenever I want – like shooting on the coldest day of the year by Lake Ontario and making it look like St. Tropez.

I love the casual look and the way you sportily wear it. Having such a gift from a parent makes it ever so much more valuable. Enjoy.
