RECYCLING BY NUMBERS
Believe it or not, the jet-set go through their fair share of plastic containers, especially of the greek yoghurt variety. One evening, upon debating whether or not the pseudo-aluminum pizza tray that housed dinner was recyclable, I settled the score by Googling ‘recycling by numbers’. This resulted only in an affirmation of all previous knowledge – numbers one and two are most definitely recyclable; four and seven aren’t typically recyclable; five and six are sometimes recyclable and never, ever recycle a number three. Our pizza tray was unnumbered, so, I went ahead and made it an honorary seven. It now resides under the oven as a just-in-case-we-need-to-reheat-something receptacle.
As you may have predicted, fur was not on the list. But, I’d give it a number one, as in always recycle. Since 2013 was decidedly the year of the animal skin – the Guardian reported almost 70% of fashion designers used fur in their Fall 13 collections – it makes sense to keep your fur, like your pizza trays, just in case.
Just in case you need to reheat your style, to be sure.
One way to sizzle is by purchasing your fur well into its third reincarnation. It is the kinder way – and if you’re eating pizza out of a recyclable tray, chances are, it’s the only kind of fur in the budget. But as you can see from this photo shoot we did for Shoppalu, one can still appear quite jet-set no matter the provenance or price; fur is always fur. Provided you take care of your skins, they can last a lifetime. (Stay tuned for how I styled my mom’s racoon coat from her teenage years. Back then, it was customary for a mother to furnish her daughter with a fur coat. Nowadays it’s more like furnished with a new duvet cover, which, I might add, could very well double as a coat with the right type of belt.)
