Toronto | The Interior Design Show

I originally went to the Interior Design Show  to look at the Korhani exhibit. A down-the-rabbit-hole installation featuring superimposed projections of human faces onto life-size mannequins – including one of creative director, Kirsten Korhani – that talked. The company is well-known for blurring the lines between home decor and fashion, presenting gorgeous gowns and outerwear made from carpets at World MasterCard Fashion Week.

Then I met Patrizia Moroso’s Victoria and Albert love seat. She’s kind of like the interior design world’s Miuccia Prada. Initials reversed. An IDS guest of honour, Moroso has propelled the design company originally started by her parents in WWII, to international fame. A recent collaboration with Diesel should be made known to all fashionphiles. Her designs are intricate and simple all at once, modern and retro. It is within this equilibrium that a couch could make you do a double-take, just as it did to me that day. I think this is the point of the Interior Design Show – to appreciate the artistic impact of furniture and appliances beyond whisking a good creme fraiche and silent spin cycles. The spaces we live in should be functional, aesthetic extensions of ourselves – just like fashion.
