The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up

My mom’s vintage trench coat from Paris in the 70s // Blank NYC vegan leather moto jeans // SENSO boots // Le Chateau bucket bag // Zara turtleneck // PANDORA rings

Last night my boyfriend and I stayed up really late working on a project in our bedroom – no, unfortunately not that kind of project. We finally bit the bullet and succumbed to our paltry furniture budget. Now, truth be told, we said we’d wait to save up for real people furniture one month at a time, but looking around our apartment our needs have exceeded our patience (and our ability to save money) and as expected (but not hoped) every fucking thing we own is from Ikea.

But I’m ok with that. There is nothing wrong with Ikea. In fact, just last night around 12:35am I found myself admiring the intricacies of our Hemnes manual. You know, it’s something of real genius to streamline at-home assembly the way they do. Anyway, the reason why we’ve learned to love our Swedish chattels is because we’d rather our things have a home than wait for us to somehow squeeze a three-thousand-dollar armour out of a blogger salary. Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce to you The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo.

Thanks to my friend, Rosslyn B, I am now embarking (and dragging my boyfriend along with me) on a journey to tidy up once and for all. The book makes a great case for discarding anything in your life that doesn’t spark joy. And wouldn’t you rather be surrounded by only things you love? I’m only halfway through but so far we’ve completed some successful exercises like imagining the “lifestyle” you want. We did this last night. There were many roadblocks. Some tears, but we got through it. I encourage all couples to sit down and talk about what they specifically envision when getting dressed in the morning or their ideal kitchen environment. It sounds excessive, I know. But this is not a blog for practical people who think “feeling” and “dreaming” is for losers. BYE FELICIA.

So we’re starting with an 8-drawer dresser from Ikea to hold our jewelry, sunglasses and accessories – once we’ve purged. I have to admit, the dresser isn’t complete yet because we stopped when the manual said we had to hammer these white, translucent little “ghost screws” (as I like to call them) and we realized we don’t own a hammer. To the convenience store down the street! (We are awful adults).

Stay tuned for pictures of our finished carpentry masterpiece and do let me know if you have any organizational secrets! Would love to exchange ideas about “tidying up” and the life-changing magic of it. All you gotta do is comment below :) And if you like my outfit, that’s great, too.

To help keep my closet current and organized, I turn all my hangers backward once a year (hang them from the inside of the rod). Then as I wear each piece I return it on the hanger forward, so I know I’ve worn it. At the end of the year, or sometimes every six months, I take a look at which hangers are still facing the wrong way. This way, I know what I’ve worn in the last 6 months to a year, and what I can do without.

Oh. My. God. That is brilliant!!!!! I can already know which pieces are going to stay unturned. It’s so hard to toss things – but I think donating to a women’s shelter is a good way to feel better about parting with clothing. What do you do with the pieces you don’t wear?

Love this trench–and the whole look. I’m a sucker for blue+ black.
