Beauty | Post-Workout Hair

If you’ve been following along my social media (see Twitter on Thursday mornings before my Nike Training Club class for SOS tweets), you’re either considering the unfollow button or completely thrilled to be inundated with my fitness progress. To me, there are no downsides to being in shape, not even the rush of lacitc acid through my glutes when I try to sit on the toilet after leg day. But, there is only one downside for us girls with long hair: post-workout frizz.

From Keratin treatments to cornrows, I’ve tried countless products and tricks to achieve the perfect post-workout hair. When I’m staring in the mirror after my Bikram yoga class or a 5k run, there’s a moment I ask myself if the day will come when I must choose between my six pack or my hair. Like, why can’t I just look like Adriana Lima after a grueling workout? All luscious locks blowing in the wind.

In the spirit of physical progress, I’ve accumulated a few secret weapons along the way: Dry shampoo (a saviour for post-workout hair) and most recently, the new AG Hair Smoothing Balm. I love the balm so much that I’ve switched my entire shampoo and conditioner regime to the AG Hair Smooth line.

The first thing I love about the Smoothing Balm (and the other products in the line) is that you don’t feel like you’ve got about ten dollars worth of product in your hair. Residue makes my hair really hard to work with so I prefer when I can actually feel my hair and not some oily version of it. The Smoothing Balm is concentrated enough so that you only need about a dime-sized amount for longer hair.

Since I only wash my hair about once or twice a week, I use the Smoothing Balm right after the first blow dry, and then use it again after each workout to control frizz and flyaways – it makes my hair so shiny, too! This really ensures that I can just body-shower after my workout and head to whatever event follows, looking like an approximation of a Victoria’s Secret model. This also ensures that I can leave the gym looking cute in my workout gear and not exit through the backdoor with a blanket over my head hoping nobody sees me. As Terry Benedict would say: “Run and hide.”

Here’s how to achieve the perfect post-workout hair using AG Hair’s Smooth product line:

After taking my hair out of a ponytail or whatever concoction I’ve updid it in for the workout, I comb it out and separate it into sections. Using the AG Hair Firewall Argan Flat Iron Spray, I spray each section and then run a flat iron through.

If my hair is looking extra dry, I’ll put a drop of AG Hair The Oil, rich in Moroccan argan oil, on the ends. Ombre hair colour is notorious for dry ends because they’ve been colour-treated the most.

Next, I emulsify a small amount of the AG Hair Smoothing Balm in my palms and smooth it through my hair wherever I need extra polish, and to tame frizz and flyaways caused by too many downward dogs.

You can find AG’s Smoothing Balm now in salons and it retails for $22.00 CDN.

The result? Both a six pack and polished, post-workout hair.
