Jetset WMCFW | Preordering in Pyjamas

Fuchsia, camo, plaid, quilt and fur. Repeat. Sometimes when I’m watching a runway show I get the urge to buy my favourite pieces the next day (or that evening in pyjamas, if online shopping permits). It’s this compulsive bout of consumerism engendered by skinny models wearing fuchsia wool coats and short miniskirts that makes websites like Moda Operandi successful. Unfortunately, Lauren Santo Domingo has yet to include a WMCFW designer in her preorder trunkshows. Considering most of MO’s customers hail from Dubai, it’s no wonder they’re not really interested in things like parkas and men’s fur shorts.

But what’s totally tubular about Mackage’s Fall ’14 collection is that the entire collection was available for preorder at Holt Renfrew this past Saturday. Oops, should have told you sooner. Sorry, not sorry. But like, way to advertise to the people up in the third row. I had to steal a press release from somebody’s inbox this morning (not saying who) in order to tell you all that we missed the opportunity to shop Toronto’s first don’t pay a cent event in leather jackets.

I dunno, I think Holts underestimates how foaming at the mouth we are about next season’s fashion trends. The Mackage trunkshow ran from 11am – 5pm on Saturday. That’s it. Even MO lets their trunkshows run at least a week. I may know nothing about retail (which I’m proud of) but I do know quite a lot about consumer psychology (as a victim of it for 28 years). Six hours is too little time to create any real FOMO. I mean, what if we had a week – that’s enough time to transfer funds from an offshore account to pay for next year’s winter jacket. Or here’s a thought, online shopping.

*crickets.

Love your fashion week coverage and am disappointed that I didn’t say a quick hello at the 424 Fifth event yesterday. I’m such wallflower at fashion events. Next time!
