Jetset WMCFW | Prosthetic Fashion

We warmly welcomed Sunny Fong back to the tents with open arms – even if those limbs were frozen to death (there is no heat in David Pecaut Square, exposed toes beware). It’s been one year, two seasons, and 365 days since the Project Runway alumnus’ showed at World MasterCard Fashion Week (yes, I’ve been counting). But I gotta say Sunny played a dirty trick on me when I last spoke to him at his Holiday collection preview for eBay – he told me he wasn’t going to show at #WMCFW. I gotta say, I’m really happy he changed his mind – slash – kept it a secret.

You’ll be hearing about this show a lot thanks to Sunny’s crowd-funding experiment to raise money for his show (the going rate for a spot at #WMCFW is $10,000. Models not included). The designer also debuted a Vawk prosthetic leg “accessory” he created in collaboration with Design Exchange’s Emerging Designer Competition winners, The Allelles. (All L’s as in LLLLLLL).

The clothes showed a darker side of Vawk, with contemporary notes that came in the form of metallic sleeves and short, croc embossed skirts with asymmetric zipper details. As always, Sunny Fong knows a good dress. This season he went for a streamlined silhouette – less lace, more sheer – with gold medallions. He also showed us that he knows a good suit. The Vawk woman is an evening lady in pants, dress and even, prosthetic accoutrements.
