Last year I found myself at a hotel pool in Miami, alone, taking a self-imposed day off after what felt like 365 days on. I really didn’t know what to do with my newfound free time other than drink Coronas and judge people’s style. Enter, a pair of black slides.
From one side of the pool I admired this stylish young mom and her stylish black slides, wondering where she got such a beautiful, feminine pair of rubber pool shoes like that. The only slides I knew up until that point were Birkenstocks and my boyfriend’s. But I thought, you know what, today is YOUR DAY OFF. Stop thinking about finding new fashion brands. Just admire and move on.
But that’s not what happened. As the sun began to move across the sky later that day, myself and the slide girl, found ourselves sliding our beach chairs literally side by side, vying for the last sliver of sunshine on the pool deck to be found.
K. If the fashion gods ever gave a sign, I would be forever cursed if I didn’t take that as one.
“I couldn’t help but admire your slides,” I said to her.
“Thanks,” she replied, “I designed them myself.”
Of course. Turns out the girl sitting beside me was fashion designer and industry maven, Michelle Vale, from New York City. At the time she was just raising money to fund her latest endeavour, SOAK, slides that are comfortable and chic, waterproof, vegan and made in America. I love the little pebbling detail on the soles. We exchanged email addresses and have been in touch ever since.
I’ve watched her company grow over the past year or so and I was lucky enough to be the first blogger to ever get to try a pair myself. (I have three pairs now and I love all of them). Michelle and I get together every once in a while when I’m in NYC or she’s in Toronto. And I was so so so overjoyed when I found out that SOAKs are now available at Augustina in Yorkville. How amazing is that?
SOAKs are the perfect sandal for women who, like me, wouldn’t be caught dead wearing flip-flops in the city, but love a comfy-chic style in between the red carpets. I wear my SOAK slides to yoga, to walk Sofia, around the house, on boats, at the beach, on vacation, with jeans on date night, with cute little skirts when I go for ice cream, with sweats, with maxi dresses, and of course I wear them poolside. You can even change into them after work instead of wearing heels to go meet up for drinks with your friends. I’d rock them under a pencil skirt, hell yes. They come in so many different colours to compliment any style and skin tone.
Wanna try them? Well, I’m giving away a pair of colour blocked SOAK slides (my faves) to ONE lucky reader! Here’s how to win:
- Leave a comment below with your name, email, shoe size and colour block sandal of choice.
- Sign up for SOAK newsletter at www.definitionofsoak.com (scroll to the bottom of the homepage)
We will be picking a winner by Monday, June 27th, 2016 at midnight!
You must live in either Canada or the USA, please note that due to supply, your colour choice might not be available but we will try our ver very best to get you into a pair that you will love forever. As for sizing, please note that if you wear a half-size, it is recommended you round to the size down. I wear a size 6.5 so in SOAK I’m a size 6. However, if you have a wide foot and wear a half-size, it’s recommended to go a size up. So, if I wear a 6.5 but have wide feet, I would take a size 7 in SOAK. Makes sense?
Good luck to everyone and be sure to visit Augustina next time you’re in Yorkville to check out SOAK in real life – you’ll love them!
