Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman dropped last night out of the blue like a BeyoncĂ© album. Literary scholars and mockingbirdies (yes, I’m coining that neologism) have been anticipating this release with some trepidation as the novel is said to proffer a not-so-saintly Atticus Finch and therefore ruining Christmas. Seriously, some people are crying about this like they would upon hearing there’s no such thing as Santa Claus. (Please, God, don’t let any of my readers be under 10 years old). But it’s true – Atticus is a literary hero for most people I know. I, on the other hand, was always more of a Jay Gatsby kind of pre-teen.

But this new novel has my attention mainly because I am fascinated by unpublished works. They oftentimes hold the secrets to the fictional worlds we’ve come to know and love. In Harper Lee’s case, the secret is one that shows an older Atticus who is very much a white supremacist – and what’s even more interesting is that there are some scholars who have believed him to be so all along. Imagine the gratification they must be feeling right now? It’s wild. It’s fiction and yet has so much cogency in the real world.

No wonder Kobo is charging $17.99 for the ebook. I was so excited to download it yesterday but when I saw the price I hesitated. That’s pretty high for a digital copy (just imagine all the prosciutto I could buy for that price). So, now I’m stuck with the decision of shelling out $17.99 for a digital copy of a book I may not even like but know that as a recreational bookworm, I should own, which brings me to the fact that I should probably just buy the hardcover version, which costs double. I’ve gone from zero to a $35.00 commitment in 150 words. But like, do I want to be the person who upon receiving guests in my future home library cannot boast ownership of one of the most talked about novels of 2015?

I won’t buy the digital version because I use my Kobo for fast reads on vacation; books I think I will love to read but not necessarily want anyone to know I own. It’s like my own little secret library harbouring titles such as Why Men Love Bitches, Crazy Rich Asians and its sequel, China Rich Girlfriend, It Starts With Food, Twilight and many more guilty pleasures. And no, there isn’t any Danielle Steele, yet. What can I say? Some people have a cake porn stash, I have a secret stash of literary dross.

Come to think of it, it’s really no wonder I had an affinity for Jay Gatsby and his affected library of uncut books.

Has anyone here read Go Set a Watchman yet?
