Being a lazy woman can be like a death sentence to style and elegance. I should do my hair and put on lipstick before leaving the house – but ah, who cares; I can’t be bothered. Ipsto facto, ugly.
The corollary should however be stated that a woman too done up is also ugly, in a more macabre sense. I’m thinking Dirk Bogarde in final scene of Death in Venice with hair dye running down his face.
Watching The Real Housewives of New York a few days ago I realized the difference is Carole Radziwill and everybody else. Carole is the most casual out of all the women and yet the most elegant. She is both lazy and beautiful. When all the girls show up wearing high heels and body con dresses with sparkles and tits, she wears a knit kaftan and lets her hair air dry – and still looks better than everyone. To the beach, she is in a one-piece cut like shorts. Bethany is wearing a body chain, wedges and thong. Point, Carole.
I think she’s mastered the je ne sais quoi of looking like you just rolled out of bed and threw on whatever. I did that this morning and am subsequently wearing blue running tights and a black hoodie ie. not cute. You can’t be literal when it comes to the je ne sais. You actually have to try and then appear as though you haven’t tried at all. We’re getting close to sprezzatura territory but I’m still not sure if we can use that word to describe a woman. Is Carole Radziwill sprezzy? Bitch, she might be.
I leave you with a quote from Coco Chanel that will have saved me from expounding on this topic for another five paragraphs. “If a woman is poorly dressed, you notice her dress, and if she’s impeccably dressed, you notice the woman,” Coco Chanel.
