The only socks I ever wear are sockettes (sometimes with holes in them) and athletic socks for working out (and even then, I’ve been considering going commando). There are many reasons why I dislike socks; some make sense, others don’t. Aesthetically speaking, I much prefer the look of a bare ankle in between a hemline and a shoelace. Maybe it’s all those years spent studying The Hays Code, but I’ve always found an ankle to be quite provocative.
On the other hand (or other foot – ha!), I find that wearing socks induces an acute feeling of suffocation. Call it lack of circulation or neurosis, by the time I’m halfway through the day in mid-rise socks, I’m breathing into a paper bag.
Now, in minus double-digit weather – which were precisely the conditions during this shoot – the consequences for going sockless (in reality I have sockettes on, which is arguably the same), can be Herculean. Especially when the wind starts to lick that bare skin. But as I say time and time again, “il faut souffrir pour être belle.”
I’m on my second Daniel Wellington watch, opting for the Classic Glasgow Lady in silver. I love the blue and white nautical stripe.
